Bonsai Hero 150 Watt LED Grow Light Panel Review
|When many growers begin to look into the market of LED growing, it can be very confusing and time consuming to figure out which panel is worth investing in. Many manufacturers have made it somewhat difficult to determine the specifications of their light; hiding behind the ‘total watts’ to make a low end panel seem like something that will outperform a 1000 watt high pressure sodium or metal halide setup. There are a few ‘top of the line’ grow light panels that really stand out, but not because they drain hundreds of watts from the wall, but because they’re simply made well, with high end components and parts. One of these that we’ve become fans of is Bonsai Hero’s 150 watt LED grow panel. It’s the latest and greatest from this company based out of The Netherlands, and it promises fantastic results for all stages of growth; seedling, cloning, vegging, and flowering.
High Quality Parts
The Bonsai Hero 150 Watt LED Grow Panel utilizes some of the highest quality parts from top rated manufacturers such as Cree and Osram. The panel is comprised of 6 Cree XBD Royal Blue, 24 Cree XBD 701 Red, 7 Cree XBD White and 16 Osram LH-CPDP DeepRed Led’s.
Growing Coverage
An important factor when deciding which LED to purchase should be the area that the panel adequately covers. With a recommended ‘distance from the canopy’ of 8 to 32 inches, the Bonsai Hero 150 Watt LED Grow Light Panel provides a maximum growing area of 32 inches by 39 inches. This ranges because you’ll want to adjust your panel away from the canopy during the earlier stages of growth for seedlings and vegging plants, and move it closer when you’re flowering.
Reflectors
Each individual LED has it’s own reflector to maximize the amount of light that’s delivered to the plants. They’re built in a variety of 106 degree and 123 degree angles to help control the optimal light pattern for the best growth possible through all stages of development. Additionally, there are no plastic panels of glass barriers in front of the diodes, thus providing the maximum amount of efficiency since none of the light is filtered or diminished.
Cooling
It’s no secret that LED’s run much cooler than high intensity discharge lights, and even fluorescent lights. This holds true with the panels than Bonsai Hero produces. It’s equipped with a metal core PCB to allow the best heat dissipation possible.
2 Growing Modes
There are two different ‘modes’ that the panel can be operated in and switched two. The first mode is ideal for vegging, mother plants, and the first couple weeks of flowering – it doesn’t use the full intensity of all the diodes. The second mode is ideal for full flowering from the second week to the end of the flowering cycle – it uses all of the diodes to the ideal settings for maximum potency, growth, and development.
Externalized Power Supply
It’s quite apparent that Bonsai Hero takes heat and cooling as a top priority. Everything has been thoroughly thought out and developed including the location of the power supply. Every power supply creates heat and can contribute to inefficiency if the temperatures exceed a certain level. They’ve designed this panel so the power supply is external, and not contributing heat, thus using less energy because less cooling is needed. It’s quite simple, but a genius idea that has been well thought-out.
Extremely Quiet
The sound of a grow light can be an unpleasing grey noise that you’d like to minimize. Many are happy to find out that this panel generates only a small amount of noise. In fact, around -40dB at a distance of 2′ away.
Warranty
Purchasing a quality LED grow light is considered an investment. Bonsai Hero knows this, and have included a 2 year warranty from the time of purchase that covers your panel. This gives many added peace of mind, knowing that they truly stand behind their quality.
Final Thoughts
We’ve seen a lot of excellent praises about Bonsai Hero from around the web. With a simple search it’s easy to find actual growing journals that have shown it’s success from a variety of sources. The price of one Bonsai Hero 150 Watt LED Grow Light Panel is $449 including shipping, but you’ll get a discounted price with the more panels you bundle with your purchase. Overall, we believe that it’s a great panel that’s difficult to find anything wrong with – truly a top of the line grow light. It does what it says it will do, and it does it well!
I’m a bit confused by this fixture. I just received a Hans 150w, and the PAR readings are . . . less than expected. I checked the Watt meter, and it’s pulling 152, but that’s also about as high as the PAR readings dead center from 36 inches. I’m testing it out in cabinets, and it’s next to an Area51 RW75 (75 watts), and the A51 is putting out much more light (center PAR at 30″ is 230 for Hans and 340 for A51). They’re both using top-shelf diodes, so is the Hans losing all of the juice through spread? I just can’t imagine how you could flower under this light.
